LIATe is unique in that while it uses hardware designed for virtual reality environments, it was designed primarily for artistic projects; to exploit the artistic possibilities of the most recent technologies and push them forward aesthetically. Thus the facility differs from many others in two important ways:
Emphasis on sound quality
Its Theatre’s 24 full-bandwidth Genelec speakers, 2 subwoofers, and 24 channels of pristine, archive-quality converters (computer audio interfaces) make it a world-class multi-channel audio environment. That, and careful attention to the acoustics of the room differentiate the lab’s audio from all other labs in the region.
Emphasis on art
Whereas the goal of many laboratories is to simulate existing or similar experiences, the aesthetic goals of LIATe are to create new and innovative correlations between audio and video – exploring the beauty and potential of where you are, not necessarily trying to make you believe you are somewhere else. Thus the projectors are high contrast and high definition, and while covering over 150 square feet, the screens are relatively small so that images remain crisp from virtually every viewing position. The projectors are 2D, non-edge-blending, and all screens are flat, like an art gallery that emphasizes high quality, unique artistic experiences. For work with 3D imaging, the control room’s stereoscopic display and conventional 7.1 sound system is equipped for the exploration of unique correlations between 3D video and audio.
